RECYCLE : Look at the colour and material. Are they classic quality or current? Look at some current magazines for ideas. What would it take to make it fresh? Would you wear it today if it fit you, your evolving wardrobe and lifestyle and was stylish?
Do you have a good quality, but, dated, dowdy looking, long wool skirt that fits AND is in a colour and material that works with your existing tops? Shorten and hem it at knee length, after pegging it into a perfectly fitting pencil skirt.
The extra fabric can be used for a contrasting cuff, binding , epaulets or covered buttons on a blouse or sweater. It could also be used for facing and lengthening or cuffing a pair of pants that are too short.
Those good quality, classic pleated pants (that add five+ pounds) can be renewed. release the front panels from the waistband and the side seam. Then release the pleats, substitute a small 4" dart where the pleat was and remove the extra material off of the side seam. This might also eliminate the pockets (a slimming trick). This material can be used to lengthen the pants to the current length (about 3/8"/ 1 cm above the ground in bare feet). Peg those voluminous pants down to 18" or less circumference (equally on both sides).
A simple dated dress, can be updated by lowering the neckline (new trim, piping or stitching optional),removing the arms and pegging and raising or lowering the skirt. It could also be worn as a tunic over pants or a pencil skirt.
These alterations are only worth doing on good quality items that work with your wardrobe style, colours and life. These are relatively simple alterations for you or a dressmaker to do.
The link is still broken. SPACE: A photograph of the item or event when you wore it preserves the memory in a much smaller package than the outfit. a photo, a 4x6 scrap of the material and a brief written remembrance can all be saved in a small photo album or scrapbook. Good for sharing your memories later with others.
This link is STILL broken. Is anyone monitoring???

Great advice. I totally believe in purging. Every year or so, just go through your closet and be brutal. If you haven't worn it in a year, you really probably won't wear it again. And by donating it all to charity, you'll be helping out people in need. Total win-win situation. My only problem? Sentimental stuff - the tshirt I bought on a great vacation, a sweater someone made, etc -- unwearable for various reasons but I just can't let go!
