"I was actually waiting for your book to come out at Barnes and Noble, and reserved it two weeks before it came out. I told my therapist about it and your web site and how you made a positive impact on me." -M

Top 5 Things to Do

There are sure to be many reasons for wanting to live a healthier life, whether it’s to avoid the streak of diabetes and heart disease in your family or just to feel better throughout the day. Though it may seem like a lot of work, the first 30 days of living healthier doesn’t have to be a struggle. Here are the five most important things you can do to ensure success.

1. Eat well.

Make every calorie you eat count toward your health. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and try to incorporate some whole grains, healthy fats and lean protein. Also, remember to control your portions. Try to avoid foods that have a lot of sugar, sodium, trans fat and preservatives. If it’s in a package or a can, it’s probably not good for you. If you are having a tough time eliminating these items from your diet, try to gradually remove them from your day.

2. Exercise.

No matter what you do, get out there and do it! Exercise has been shown to improve your mood, combat certain chronic diseases, enhance your memory function, help you sleep and even increase your libido! Get at least 30 to 45 minutes of exercise for three days or more a week. Continue to find ways to make exercise fun—go roller skating, play Dance Dance Revolution, go bowling, swimming, surfing or mountain climbing. No one said exercise has to be boring.

3. Keep your mind strong.

Thoughts are powerful. Maintaining a positive attitude during the first 30 days of healthy living is almost as important as changing your food and exercise routines. Continue to tell yourself that you are making good changes to your life. Be a cheerleader for your health, even when your friends and family beg you to share a pizza.

4. Get enough rest.

Modern society likes to characterize sleep as a luxury, but in reality it’s a biological necessity. Get at least seven to eight hours of sleep most nights of the week and you’re sure to improve brain function, reduce stress and even help prevent cancer and heart disease.

5. Stay motivated.

Tap into the reasons why you want to live healthier, and remind yourself of these reasons whenever you hit a rough patch. Living healthier is a life-long process, so you’ll need to continue to motivate yourself throughout. Remember—your life is precious. Keep healthy and you’re sure to live a long and happy life.

Your top 5 list is dead on! I've been following these principles for the past three and a half months and have lost 20 pounds. I have twenty more to go...it's true that if one is going to lose weight permanently it should be for the "right" reasons, not just to fit into a bikini! I've decided the changes I've made are going to be for life, because I want to live a long one :)
