Help a Pet in Iowa

Help a Pet in Iowa

Even shortly after adopting a new pet, you’ll quickly realize how much he or she becomes a part of the family. And if you haven’t—why don’t you stop and appreciate your pooch, kitty or other fabulous companion right now…because you never know what could happen tomorrow.

Pets in Cedar Rapids, IA, and other locations in the Midwest have been abandoned as their owners evacuated their homes due to the terrible flooding and the tornado that swept through the area. Additional animals that normally live in shelters have been relocated to school, private kennels and the Cedar Valley Humane Society. These places might keep the pups dry, but there aren’t enough food or necessary supplies to take care of hundreds of animals.

Yesterday, the water at the Coralville Reservoir (about 30 miles from Cedar Rapids) was marked as 714 feet above sea level, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This situation is going to take some time to get under control, so why don’t you lend a paw—errr, hand—or a donation if you aren’t in the area. PetSmart Charities, a non-profit organization, is dispatching its Emergency Relief Waggin’ with supplies for 500 animals today to Cedar Rapids. But they will need to restock and refuel, so visit PetSmart Charities and give what you can today for the animals.

You’re so lucky to have your great new pet! Show you care for those who have been separated from their cuddly creatures. [CNN Money]
