Puppy Profiling
When people think about bringing home a new pet and have their heart set on a dog, they usually know exactly what kind they want—cute, cuddly and friendly are all descriptions that come to mind.
So its no wonder that animal shelters across the country are having a hard time convincing prospective pet parents to adopt big black Rottweilers, Labradors and other dark-haired, large breeds. While there aren’t hard and fast statistics, one shelter in Arkansas says 13 out of 14 dogs euthanized last months were larger black dogs. Often painted as menacing characters on film and in fiction, these dogs actually make great and loyal companions. Rottweilers are good protectors and quietly self-assured; Labs are eager, gentle and kind.
If the ideal pet for you is a dog, consider your lifestyle and family needs, and don’t be afraid to get to know some of the larger dogs at your local shelter. You may just find a friend for life! [Associated Press]
