Third-Degree Adoption Process

You might feel like you’re on trial. The never-ending questions, the access to your financial records and a review of your home. But nope, all you are trying to do is adopt a pet.

People in the Washington, D.C. area are avoiding getting a pet from shelters due to the difficult process instated by the Washington Humane Society. They require “interviews with every member of the family, several home visits, a series of medical reviews for all animals in the house, reference checks [and] copies of leases and training courses.” Oh, you lease a car? No go. Your dog has been sick several times and had to go the vet? You’re an unfit puppy parent! (Just kidding, we had to.)

The Humane Society hopes to make the method of madness easier and more welcoming to those considering adoption, but would still take up a decent amount of time with an interview, a home inspection and personality matching for the most accurate pet placement.
