Question:Is it ok to have a pet around a newborn child?

I keep hearing conflicting information about whether it's ok to have a dog or a cat when you bring a baby into the home. I've heard if you had the pet for a while, it might get jealous when the baby arrives but some animals are ok. Then I also heard that it's not good for the development of the baby. Any advice?

Answer:

I don't think there's anything wrong with letting a pet around the baby, but I would just be careful at first. The pet needs time to adjust to this new person, so I would limit access at first (but not ban them from the baby - that could cause even more jealousy). Then. once they get to know each other, they can spend more time together abd hopefuly become best friends.
