Introducing Dog to New Baby
We're expecting a new baby this winter, and I'm a little nervous about introducing him to our other "baby" - our three year-old Maltese. He is such a good dog, but I know they sometimes have trouble adjusting (especially when they're no longer the center of attention). Does anyone have any tips on making this a smooth transition?
My sister went through this last year. Someone recommended this strategy, and it worked for her: before you come home from the hospital, have your husband, mom, or someone else bring one of the receiving blankets that the baby was wrapped in home for the dog to smell. Dogs recognize us by our scents, so this will familiarize the dog with the baby before they actually meet. Then, when you come home, you should come into the house first - and alone - to greet the dog. Your husband should follow with the baby a minute (or less) later. Then you two can introduce the dog to the baby. I'm sure they will become great friends. Congrats and good luck!
