Turning the Lights Off
What would happen if 24 countries turned off all the lights for one hour? You may find out on March 29th. “Earth Hour” started last year on March 31st in Sydney, when 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses turned off their lights for one hour with the hopes of inspiring the rest of the world to take action against climate change.
It worked: People across the globe are committing to turn off all of their lights for one hour on Saturday. This year’s Earth Hour will span 14 times zones: starting in Christchurch, New Zealand, and ending 20 hours later in San Francisco. More than 100 cities across the globe have signed on to turn off the lights, and some have committed to shutting off the lights on major landmarks, including the Sears Tower in Chicago, Brighton Pier in England and the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz in San Francisco.
Coal-fueled electricity has been proven to be one of the major causes of global warming. In honor of Earth Day, I’m interviewing a wonderful expert Ron Dembo, who started the company Zerofootprint.org. Check back to hear the podcast and Ron's tips on going green.
Earth Hour is 8 p.m. this Saturday. What are you planning to do for Earth Hour?
