It's All in the Name

It's All in the Name

You named your car within a matter of seconds, no problem. Dog? Rover, easily. But the title that will stay forever attached to your precious offspring? That was probably a much tougher decision to make.

After battling back and forth with your pregnant mom-to-be, you finally settled on ___________ (fill in name of your beautiful baby). You may have exchanged some harsh words, disagreed and been given the “silent treatment,” but we bet you didn’t go to court!

A family in Sweden fought legal disputes after they named their son Lego. Yes, Lego…like the building blocks. After being denied by the Swedish Tax Authority and the County Administrative Court, the Administrative Court of Appeals in Stockholm finally granted permission to keep the young boy’s name as is. The opposed officials sourced a case where a family was not allowed to name their child “Ikea.” Wow, this just gets better and better!

Sure, you want to enjoy your child’s name—you’re going to be saying it a lot. But think down the road to when they will go to school and perhaps become a victim of bullying. Rhyming words are a big hit with third-graders.

A name can be original without being odd. What’s your child’s name? [The Local]
