Are You Too Old To Have Kids?
Age really is just a number, at least for a 59-year-old Frenchwoman who recently gave birth by C-section to triplets. Mom and her babies—two boys and a girl—are healthy and doing well. For now, anyway. We'll be interested to see how she keeps up her stamina to run after three healthy kids (which, it should be noted, is hard for anyone at any age.)
Reports are saying that the woman sought fertility treatments at a private Vietnamese clinic willing to overlook the age limit for egg donation and IVF, which is 45 in Vietnam (in France, the limit is 42.) Regardless of any cap on age, some women simply aren’t letting it stand in their way of becoming mothers. Case in point: a 62-year-old Frenchwoman gave birth in 2001 to a child conceived through IVF. And earlier this year, an Indian woman said to be 70 years old gave birth to twins after receiving IVF treatment. Hmmm…maybe it’s just us, but the idea of getting up for 2:00 a.m. feedings and changing dirty diapers at 70 sounds a teensy bit crazy.
Do you think there should be an age limit on women trying to conceive? Let us know if you think there should be regulations on becoming a new mom over 45.
My cat had kittens but didn't have enough milk. So, every two hours I was giving milk in a bottle to 4 kittens and cleaning up after them. I thought I was going to die I was so exhausted. My granddaughter was born with acid reflux disease and would cry for about 23 hours out of 24. So, not every baby is picture perfect. I would also worry about leaving an orphan behind. Why not adopt an older child who needs love and a family?
I was a nanny for a family who had twins through IVF at 50. They adore those little girls and it's clearly been a blessing for all of them to be a family—though I know it was exhausting for them at times and having a nanny and lots of support from family really helped. I think if you want to do it and can handle it, go for it! I can't imagine wanting to chase after toddlers at 70 (as in the case of that one woman) but to each his own!
I think it really depends on the person. I know some 50- year-olds who have more energy than 20- year-olds. However, even I agree there should be a limit. A 70- year-old mom is a bit much. However, that limit should be determined for each person after many interviews. (Who/what agency would handle that, I have no idea.)
An IQ limit, maybe. An age limit? Nope.
There is no real "cut-off" for motherhood. I became pregant "the old-fashioned way" @ age 46. Should Geena Davis (who had twins @ 48) be told she was "too old?" How about Joan Lunden (child @ 52; could be misspelling her name). There's far more danger to the world from people having children they don't really care about -- and those people, by and large, are younger, not older.
I'm scared to touch this one, but yeah, this doesn't sit so well with me. I know anything can happen at any time of your life, but the thought of not being able to really watch your kids grow up is sad...
I might get some flak for saying this but yes there should be an age limit on having babies...who would impose this limit and who would tell a woman she can't get pregnant, I don't know. But I think we all need to start listening to nature more instead of trying to cheat it. If women were supposed to have kids into their 50s and 60s naturally, then there wouldn't be menopause. Nature is telling women it's time to stop. Why can't some people listen?!?!!
