Question:Can you be addicted to breastfeeding?

According to Salma Hayek, yes. In an interview with Style magazine, the actress says she just can't stop breastfeeding. Her daughter, Valentina, was born last year.

She said: "I'm like an alcoholic. It is like, I don't care if I cry, I don't care if I am fat, I am just going to do it for one more week, one more month, and then when I see how much good it is doing her and I can't stop."

The 42-year-old also said breastfeeding does not helps mothers shed post-pregnancy weight. "The myth that says you lose all this weight when you breastfeed! That is so not true! It's like, please, will everyone stop telling me I look really well."

I am going to give breastfeeding a try when I have my first child later on this year, and I'm curious to hear other people's experiences with it. Some women - like Salma - love it, while it doesn't seem to come as easily for other women. What's your take?

Answer:

I never expected it, but I loved breastfeeding. It was so hard in the beginning, and I thought that, if I could get it going, I'd breastfeed for a year. Well, baby's first birthday came and went, then 18 months...it was really hard for me to stop! They develop such a bond of trust with you and, especially over age one, they start to get so interactive--smiling, laughing, high-fiving, playing little games while nursing. My son just stopped a few weeks ago--a couple days after his second birthday, because I'm pregnant and there's no milk left! Oh and, by the way, I'm one of those people who held onto extra weight while breastfeeding. I think everyone's different, but my sister was the same way--we didn't lose weight from breastfeeding. Still, it was all so worth it. Good luck to you!
