Living in a Maternity World

Here's something a pregnant woman isn't used to hearing—"Where did you buy that? It's so cute!"

The look this spring and summer? Your clothes. Yes, empire-waisted maternity-like tops can be found everywhere right now, and are not limited to those with child.  The look is so hot, apparently, that non-expectant women are shopping at stores like Motherhood Maternity to score this look. The shirts are also readily available at regular clothing stores, from H&M to the Gap to Anthropologie.

Why are they so popular? Because they are so very forgiving. Cinched at the bust and floating away from the body, these tops will make a woman’s chest appear larger and hide any excess belly fat she may have stored for the winter. Bradley gives two distinct warnings about this trend, though. One, for wearers: be careful that your stomach doesn’t push out and touch the loose part, because people may speculate; and two, for observers: don’t speculate. Don’t assume that a woman wearing a maternity-style shirt is having a baby. (This is just a good rule of thumb in life anyway. Never assume anyone is pregnant. Period.)

The good news for you? You can get more use out of clothes that you thought you were just going to be wearing for less than a year. And perhaps you were on top of this trend before it hit and already had half your maternity wardrobe when you discovered you were pregnant.

How do you feel knowing that you are effortlessly at the height of fashion right now?
