US News and World Report cites a study in The Journal of American Medicine that states preterm births now account for nearly 13% of all U.S. births, compared with nine percent 25 years ago.
Premature births have become more prevalent because women are having children later in life and more are using fertility treatments in order to become pregnant. Both factors can lead to multiple births and medical complications that are likely to result in preterm labor.
