Behavior Modification

Behavior Modification

Motorists in Denver are about to get a backseat driver riding with them at all times. A new device that measures the rate of acceleration will be installed in 400 vehicles in the Mile-High city.

When driving a car we tend to slam on the brakes, accelerate too quickly and take corners a bit too fast, leading to 20% lower fuel efficiency. Poor driving habits are also taking a toll on the environment by increasing emissions.

The aim of the project is to help people modify those bad driving habits by allowing them to track the measurements of the device online. Each driver will be able to see his patterns online and, hopefully, be more mindful of the way he drives the next time he gets behind the wheel.

While those sponsoring the study admit this isn’t the only way to reduce emissions, they say it’s a good start and can work hand in hand with people carpooling and taking public transportation. Even if you’re driving a new car that gets great gas mileage, it can’t hurt to think about how you drive, and whether you could be doing so more efficiently! [The Los Angeles Times]
