Know Your Mileage
You're driving home from work and you notice your gas tank could use a little replenishment—but you forgot your debit card at home and all you can scrounge up are a few quarters and some lint. The next thing you know, you're on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck to come by and help you fill up your tank.
According to organizations like AAA and Dallas-based Courtesy Patrol that provide roadside help, there has been exponential growth in the number of empty tank emergencies this year. In Philadelphia alone, out-of-gas calls doubled from 81 to 161 from May 2007 to May 2008. Are people being less responsible? Driving more? It stands to reason that we might be sitting on the side of the road just because we don't have the money to fill 'er up.
When you're buying a new car, its now more important than ever to be aware of on and off highway mileage. Take a look at your budget and make sure you've got a little wiggle room should gas prices continue to rise. Also, don't forget to ask how many miles will be left once that telltale "empty" light goes on. When you're running low, that little bit of knowledge can save you from getting stranded. [CNN]
