Answer:

Unquestionably. We've had the technology and
the know how for years. Now we have powerful economic and enviormental reasons to build
and drive fuel efficient cars.

Answer:

I think we all know that automakers "can" make cars more fuel efficient - the real problem is economy.

The US alone spends hundreds of millions each day on fuel. If we suddenly created cars and suvs that all get 50 mpg you would hit the economy with a 200% decrease in fuel need which would devastate our economy.

Can they, sure, but it will over time and unfortunately a lot of it.

Answer:

Yes. I think they can. The real question is will they? It costs a great deal of money to make things more environmentally sound...and less dependent on oil. And we all know the car companies want to make $, not spend it.

There should be government incentives for auto manufacturers who make fuel efficient vehicles.

If they don't someone else will! Check out the Automotive X Prize competition. I learned of this from my insurance company, Progressive (they sponsor). It sounds like a fun competition...

"Through an exciting partnership with Progressive Insurance, the newly renamed Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE invites teams from around the world to focus on a single goal: design viable, clean and super-efficient cars that people want to buy.

This will be a race for the ages, with major publicity and $10 million waiting for the champions… and perhaps our future hanging in the balance."
