Alejandro Junger, bestselling author of Clean: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself, recommends a 21-day detoxification routine.
"Many western hard core scientists say that… the body has its detox systems and you just have to leave it alone and it will do its job," notes Junger. But he argues that our habits don't allow for that to happen. According to Junger, toxins are coated with mucous and deposited around cells and tissues, waiting for a receive a signal to be released, neutralized and eliminated. But this signal doesn't come until digestion and absorption are complete, eight hours after we finish a meal. In fact, the entire detox process requires 12 hours.
"We never enter detox mode, because we’re always eating more often than every eight hours," says Junger.
