Breakup Survival Kit

What you do during the first 30 days after a breakup can determine how easily and how successfully you move on with your life. Melissa Kantor, author of the young-adult novel, The Breakup Bible, offers these dos and don'ts for getting through a breakup:

DON'T agree to stay friends with your ex. If you're still "in it." You won't let yourself grieve.
DO contemplate the ways the relationship boxed you in and the times you were unhappy.

DON'T keep all your energy centered on your ex—wondering what he's doing, fantasizing if she's on a date, endlessly torturing yourself.
DO start reclaiming yourself. Distract yourself by working out, calling friends, making plans for the weekend, and so on.

DON'T take on any big projects or make any permanent life changes.
DO keep up with the basics and make small changes like getting a haircut and cleaning your closets.

DON'T try to avoid the sadness, or the realization that the relationship is over.
DO approach the breakup as a change for the better, even though you'll feel really bad for a while.
