Top 3 Ways to Keep Your Cool During Change
Amid the sudden swerves and unpredictable demands of life, there is one thing over which you always have total control, where you focus your attention. That's according to peak-performance strategist, Renita Kalhorn, who offers the following techniques to help you maintain a sense of control during times of change:
1. Let go sooner. While our first inclination is to resist even positive change, paradoxically, the sooner we can let go of our attachment to how things are supposed to go, the sooner we can feel a sense of control. Ask yourself, "Is this something I can control?" If not, let it go.
2. Set a clear intention. Making a simple declaration—even better if you say it aloud—such as "I will find the doctor's phone number" or "I am going to fix this printer jam" will galvanize the full force of your focus and ensure quicker results.
3. Calibrate challenge with ability. Narrow your focus to the next doable action, such as one phone call or one meeting. Finding the optimum balance between too easy (we get bored) and too difficult (we give up) creates a heightened sense of personal control as you enter a state of "flow."
