Live It Up on Less Cash
Don't look at being frugal as doing without, but as an opportunity to experience something you wouldn't otherwise. "My daughter and I used to go to garage sales together on Saturday mornings when she was young," says Gary Foreman, editor and publisher of The Dollar Stretcher Newsletter. "It was a great bonding time."
On date night, rather than going to see yet another movie, pop some popcorn at home and go out to see the sunset. Or watch a high school or local sporting event. "Quite often it costs nothing and you don't have to pay $6 for a hot dog," Foreman points out. Forego the expensive dinner out with friends and instead, pack a picnic and plan to meet at a community concert, or invite them over for potluck and board games.
We tend to think that only elaborate, expensive activities will be fulfilling, but just the opposite is true. It's the simplest times that often create the best memories—and, as an added bonus, that leave the most cash in your pocket.
