Can Makeover Guides Actually...Guide?

Can Makeover Guides Actually...Guide?

Makeover guides are a dime a dozen, but are there any that offer sound advice and realistic solutions to beauty problems? Suzanne D’Amato of The Washington Post reviews three that claim to do so.

Brenda Kinsel's Fashion Makeover: 30 Days to Diva Style! caters to an older set of women, but offers friendly advice for finding your strong assets and personality traits and focusing on those. Hmm, that sounds like most makeover books, doesn’t it? Amato declares that it is Kinsel’s genuine voice that really makes the book stand out.

How Not to Look Old aims to help women who are interested in “looking young without looking ridiculous,” even though Charla Krupp, the author, has gone under the knife quite a few times. But, she mostly discusses specific beauty products and where to find them.

Lastly, Just Try It On! is a guide to smart shopping, and encourages women to do something they may shun: buy clothing at full price. Susan Redstone, the book’s author, argues that buying clothes on sale usually results in a pile of clothing you will never wear. If you are willing pay full price, the item may actually be a keeper.
