Let it Mellow
A recent article published on Huffington Post gives readers all the information they could ever want on the life and times of good old number one and number two.
It turns out that out of the 70 gallons of water the average American uses inside his or her home each day, about one quarter of it is used to flush our waste away. "When aiming for more equitable water usage, hippie wisdom comes in handy: If it's brown flush it down; if it's yellow, let it mellow. S'il vous plait. (Our hippie is French,)" writes cheeky environmental correspondent Simran Sethi.
Among other things you shouldn't flush down are prescription drugs, used condoms, or your dead goldfish—all of which are likely to either enter major water supplies or inspire a Disney movie.
You don't have to scare off all your guests with a less-than-tidy bowl. The experts over at The Daily Green say that leaving a plastic bottle of water in your tank can be just as effective as holding off on your 2000 flushes. Normally we wouldn't advocate water bottles, but we're willing to make an exception just this once because we know it will benefit your green home. [Huffington Post]
