Nickelodeon Goes Green

When you think of Nickelodeon being a green children's network, you normally think of a bucket of slime being dumped on someone's head. However, the cable television staple has recently maximized its efforts on trying to teach kids how to be greener. In April, the network launched its Big Green Help initiative that targets kids who may be overwhelmed with a deluge of environmental information.

The latest phase of the initiative involves a real life superhero—two-time Olympian and NBA All-star LeBron James. The 23-year-old father of two will star in a public service announcement and is a star of a fact-finding video game on the network's web site. "We're trying to get kids out of the house," James said. "And in this, we're trying to save water and do other things that can help the environment." James also reminds us that it doesn't take much to turn off a faucet or slam dunk a can into the recycling bin.

In the game, an animated version of LeBron rides his bike down a dirt road and gives kids green tips along the way. Even though your green home may not involve a lot of television or wasteful Internet surfing, this might be a fun way to teach your kids about the environment. After your kids have learned all the nifty tips from this superstar, perhaps you could help them write a letter to LeBron James that would teach him a few environmental lessons.
