Dating Equality

Dating Equality

eHarmony, the most popular online dating site on the web, has long been criticized for not allowing homosexuals to sign up. Soon, that's all about to change.

A New Jersey court ruled that failure to offer the dating service to gays is discriminatory, and the site must create a similar service for same-sex couples. The company has obliged and will launch their new site, Compatible Partners, by March 31st.

Though we're sad to see that it took this long and a court judgement to get eHarmony on the equality bandwagon, we're happy they've finally realized that homosexuals need help looking for love just as much as heterosexuals do! And though this is one small sign that the country is coming to terms with equal rights for gays, the very public fight against Prop 8 in California (a ballot measure that passed on Election Day to ban gay marriage) shows that homosexuals have a long way to go before they can truly find equality.

Do you think this change is long overdue? Do you think this country is ready to look past sexual orientation the way its beginning to look past race? [CNN]

I had no idea! That they didn't allow gay peeps, and that it took a court case to make that happen!

Yes, I agree that this is long overdue. I also am clueless as to why people discriminate toward homosexuality. The religious arguments people make for marriage don't hold much credit with me when our divorce rate in this country remains so high. To love and to be loved is a basic human need and right. As a California resident, I voted against Prop 8 and have signed the petition to have it repealed, which I believe the California Supreme Court is about to do a review on Prop 8. Link

Looooong overdue. The purpose of eHarmony, I think, is to help people establish relationships with other people. Last time I checked, they are not the moral arbiters of online dating and I am pretty sure it needs to stay that way. It's so discouraging to me that we can elect a black president, but fail to recognize that we are discriminating in the same manner when it comes to barring gay rights. Just as we should separate church and state, sites like eHarmony should recognize their purpose and stick with that. No, judging allowed. And the fact that it requires a separate site? I don't get it.

I do think that this country is beginning to look past sexual orientation. But in the same manner that we still have many race hurdles to overcome, we also have so many to conquer when it comes to prejudice, including that against gay individuals.

The day after Obama was elected, Prop. 8 blew up all over the media ... we've come along way, but we still have a long way to go.

Oh my gosh yes - we are so long overdue! There are more beliefs and religions and ideas in this world than we could ever hope to count or keep up with - so who is right? Who is so arrogant to think that they or their group has it all figured out? Who am I to tell someone else how to live, what to believe and who they can and cannot fall in love with? As long as your beliefs do not bring harm to anyone, you should be free to pursue what is important to you be it love, religious beliefs, spiritual beliefs, or ideas and dreams. To live with such a narrow view of the world and how it should operate is to cheat yourself and others from a full and rewarding life. There is enough to worry about right now, and who someone wants to date or marry should not be one of the worries.

I realized that may sound like I don't support this...what I meant by "entirely separate site" was that everyone should just be on one site, and be able to choose preferences accordingly. :)

It's about time...though I'm not sure why they need an entirely separate site, it's good to see this happening.
