To Check or Not To Check

Online dating is typically a “what you see is what you get" proposition. However, astute daters know that sometimes there is more than meets the eye.

The state of New Jersey recently enacted legislation that would require online dating sites to disclose whether or not they perform background checks. According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, key players in the industry are divided over the issue. While some think it will give consumers confidence in the online dating system and perhaps draw in some reluctant users, others feel the law is superficial and gives people a false sense of security while searching for a soulmate online.

One of the best things you can do is to keep yourself safe by following some best practices for online dating. You can have fun, and keep yourself protected, regardless of whether or not the site you use performs background checks. [Courier-Journal]
