Fatty Acids: New Hope for Treating Depression
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and renowned hospital, Massachusetts General are teaming up to study the effectiveness of Omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of depression. These compounds are found naturally in fish oil, flax seed and walnuts. Past research has shown that the use of supplements containing docosahexanoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) have been effective; however they have never been studied individually against each other or against a placebo. DHA and EPA have anti-inflammatory properties. These work to help stabilize brain cell membranes which play a role in mood regulation. Learn more about the ongoing work at ScienceDaily.
