Flicks to Fight Depression

Flicks to Fight Depression

Some of the greatest and critically acclaimed writers, poets, philosophers, musicians, painters and just plain artists have all suffered from depression. It’s a demon that drives the creative process for many. Yet out of that darkness, beauty is born. For those dealing with depression, that can be a comforting reminder. The next time you’re feeling alone or as though no one understands, try watching one of these classics that celebrates the artistic love-hate relationship with depression:

“My Left Foot”
Christy Brown was born with cerebral palsy to a large, low-income family. Brown learned to talk with encouragement from his family and eventually wrote an autobiography and painted using only his left foot. How’s that for an artist overcoming obstacles?

“Artemisia”
Born in 1593, Artemisia Gentileschi was a gifted female artist who was refused from a renowned all-male art academy. In this French subtitled film, watch as Artemisia fights against the male-dominated society for recognition and eventually earn her artistic glory.

“Frida”
Similar to Artemisia, “Frida” tells the story of Frida Kahlo, a Mexican female painter who struggled against sexism as well as agonizing pain from a bus accident she was involved in when she was young. Despite a tumultuous relationship with fellow artist Diego Rivera and her chronic pain, Frida continues to paint and create art that would become world renowned.

When I'm feeling down, I put in my favorite movie in the world—Mary Poppins. There's no way I can be down watching Julie Andrews!

A Little Princess (1995)

A lovely story about a little girl that empowers all girls to believe they are princesses (even if they don't look like it on the outside). My favorite movie.
