Minnesota's New Approach to Depression
For those who suffer from depression that live in Minnesota, check with your doctor about the latest trial treatment program called DIAMOND (Depression Improvement Across Minnesota, Offering a New Direction). The DIAMOND program, which is currently in place at about 10 clinics, allows clinics to hire “care managers” to regularly follow up with patients on their care and treatment: Are they taking their medications? Are they having any side effects? How do they feel about their treatment? Do they think they need to try something else? If the DIAMOND program proves successful, it will be implemented statewide by 2010.
Many health experts are excited about the DIAMOND program’s concept. Initial studies have shown that it can double the rate of treatment success. That’s especially exciting news because the success of depression treatment can be more difficult than with other health conditions because of the feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness and despair. When people are depressed and have a “why bother?” attitude, they’re less likely to take care of themselves, which can lead to other health problems. Studies have shown that people with chronic conditions who are also depressed cost twice as much to treat.
Do you think Minnesota’s DIAMOND plan will revolutionize depression treatment? Or is it another pipe dream? [Startribune.com]
