Tango to Happiness
Finally, there’s some fun news about depression. One researcher from the University of New England believes that doing the dance of love—the tango—can be an effective treatment for depression.
Apparently, there’s something about the flirtatiousness and intense connection in tango that makes people forget their negative feelings and focus solely on the dance. Even though it may be a short time without those negative feelings, it could be tremendous for a depression patient.
"I believe that if people can experience freedom from their negative thoughts for just the three minutes of a tango dance, they'll realize that such freedom is possible," says Rosa Pinniger, the psychology student who is at the heart of this research.
You don’t have to wait for Pinniger’s research to start this treatment on your own. Go ahead and sign up for a dance class. Current depression research claims that exercise can do wonders in combating symptoms, so get moving and remember that you’re on the forefront of modern, alternative medical treatments.
