Women's Broken Hearts
There's a lot of literature out there that shows that women are just as likely as men to suffer from heart disease, but did you know that young women are more likely to suffer from depression after a heart attack?
Almost half a million American women will suffer a heart attack this year, according to the Women’s Heart Foundation. Among men and women who experience a heart attack, 22% will suffer depression afterward. However, women younger than 60 are three times more likely than older men to develop depression.
Women who develop depression after a heart attack are less likely to take care of themselves, participate in treatment programs and take medications. By neglecting treatment plans, half of all heart attack victims put themselves at risk for death within a year of their attack.
