Scariest First Dates

Scariest First Dates

In honor of Halloween, we thought it would be fun to share some of favorite first date horror stories!

The beginning stages of a new relationship are filled with all sorts of fears. Will he or she like me? Do I look OK? Did I talk too much? Too little? The list goes on and on. Rarely, though, do we stop and ask, “Will my date turn out to be completely deranged?” As writer Diane Mapes learned, that should be the real scary quality to look out for in a new date.

Mapes was friendly with a guy who seemed to share similar interests. Their first date out to a movie was fine. It was the second date that had her totally spooked. Upon entering her new love interest’s apartment, she was enveloped in a shrine to serial killers. Her date tried to reassure her that his fascination was totally harmless, but when he showed her a painting he received from John Wayne Gacy (who killed more than 30 teenage boys) while Gacy was in prison, she knew it was time to flee the scene.

In another story Mapes shares from a woman’s first date, a gentleman met her at the restaurant...with his mother. Another woman admitted that she’s a terrible first date because she’s the one that scares away all her potential partners. She says she can communicate with the dead, and whenever she goes out with someone new, she “meets” their deceased family members as well and is compelled to pass on their messages.

I met him on line. He told me, during our e-mail exchange before meeting in person, he had moved out here from back East so he could work with some large, well known law firm. I don't usually have someone pick me up at my home, I usually meet them out in a public place. We had e-mailed for quite some time, seemed okay. He showed up and I swear he must have been "high". I'm so against all drugs, too! I quickly suggested we leave and head out to a pub. Thank goodness we did not have to drive, but could walk there. We shared a drink and the conversation was actually pretty interesting. I seemed to ask the right questions - he was not honest in his profile. He was not divorced - yet. This would be the second thing that night that did not set well with me. At this point, I told him I was ready go. The bill came and he told me he left his wallet in his car. He told me I could pay and he'd pay me back or that he could walk back to his car (while I sit and wait) to go get his wallet. I swear, I just wanted this date to end! I told him I'd take care of it this time and that yes, he could pay me back when we walked back to his car. That did not happen. Long enough story.....As we said Good-Bye at his car he told me he'd love to see me again. I told him I'd have to think about it. He followed up with an e-mail that same night. I never responded. He pretty much scared me off with those 3........Strike 3 all in the first night!

It wasn't a first date- more like a second or third. The guy had told me he was 23 (I'm 26) and then he revealed he was only 20! I decided to give him one more chance because he seemed to be much more mature than some of the other guys I've dated, but the next time we went out he kept wanting to hold my hand. To top it all off, when I told him I felt like eating pizza, he took me to - drumroll please...CHUCK E. CHEESE! I'm not even kidding.
