Question:Does getting laid off make you think about pursuing something new?

Some friends and I were discussing over lunch: should you look for a job in the same field or take a layoff as a chance to do something totally new and out of the norm? Isn't the purpose of finding a dream job to do what's in your heart instead of your head?

Answer:

When I lost my job, it made me think about why I was doing that job in the first place. I realized then that I didn't want to do that job any longer, and now I found a job doing something I have always wanted to do.

I recently lost what I thought was my dream job. i was depressed and cried over it for a few days but one day someone sent me a note that helped to turn all of that around,"When a door closes a window opens up and it sure is open and what I mean is the free time caused me to volunteer my expertise which in turn oopened a consulting position which allows me to enjoy a new freedom.

I'm all for taking detours here and there. The last time I was out of work for an extended period of time I took a job in a field I've always loved. The only downside was I had to start at the bottom, earning less than half of what I had been used to making, which was a bit stressful.

Ultimately, I jumped back to the industry I know and love, as much because it's where my head and heart are, but also because it allows me to further my goals of reaching more people with a positive message.

(The other field was interior decorating and while it's great to make spaces gorgeous and comfortable, it's more meaningful at the end of the day to feel like you helped make a positive difference in someone's life).

Answer:

I have thought about switching careers a few times -- I have multiple interests and think doing different things would be fantastic -- however I haven't done it in over 10 years of my current profession because I don't think I've reached the top. In other words, I think I have a few things still do to in this industry. Note I recently tinkered around with the idea of staying in the same industry but changing roles. I still may do this. In the end, your mind might win out over your heart, but each should have some say in what you do next...
