Frugal furniture
There is no shame in buying used furniture from a yard sale, Salvation Army,Good Will, etc. You can get very good buys if your objects don't have to be "new."

And, I'll add that many older items can be given a fresh new look with paint or stain and new hardware.
Many of the home magazines have tips on remaking furniture for new uses. Get creative. Use an old armoire as a hutch in the kitchen, for instance.
