Do an energy audit.

My husband and I have been looking for ways on how to lower our energy bill. Things that we talked about but never really put a lot of effort into. This is what we have come up with so far.

We put in new windows this last summer. If you cant swing that I used to put plastic up on the windows. It takes a couple of evenings but it's worth it.

Get a programmable thermostat. (this is actually on my list) The installing of the thermostat is a touch more daunting but we'll work on it. Have the temp down when you are sleeping and bring it up a little before you get out of bed. Also have the temp down when you are not at home. Typically it does not take very long to warm up your house.

Insulate your water heater. Again...something we've been meaning to do but have not done until this fall. It costs about 25 bucks and 20 minutes of your time.

Replace your furnace filters monthly. I try to do it on the first of every month but when I run out...it sits. So...stock up on the filters.

Turn off the lights when you are not in the room. I'm not a big fan of fluorescent lighting because I think they distort color but I do use them for my outdoor lighting.

Any other ideas are greatly appreciated.
