Divorce Politico

Divorce Politico

While numbers may point to the fact that acceptance for divorce is on the rise, sometimes it takes a little bit of popular culture to drive the point home.

When Election Day roles around in November it could be the first time in history when candidates from both parties have been significantly affected by divorce. Barack Obama, who is still in a race for the Democratic nomination with Hillary Clinton, was raised by a single mother who divorced his father when he was still a toddler. John McCain, who has already clinched his party’s nomination, inherited two stepsons when he married his first wife, Carol, in 1965. The couple got divorced and McCain married current wife Cindy.

This bit of news might not make you feel much better while you’re getting divorced, but it should be comforting on a couple of levels no matter what your political leanings are. If you’re worried about how your children will fare after your separation, you can look to Obama as an example of a successful child of divorce. He went to Harvard Law, became a Senator at age 43 and is now happily married with two children. And, if you’re worried about yourself, look to John McCain as an example as someone who has started over. He remarried his current wife Cindy, with whom he has four children, and he’s running for president at the ripe old age of 72. [Huffington Post]
