Staying in Control of Your Divorce
Generally we hire a divorce attorney to advocate for us during our divorce. But how do you maintain control over your lawyer? Does having a lawyer make the process easier, or can it actually make things more complicated? It’s important to remember a few key ideas when choosing to involve an attorney in your divorce. DivorceSupport at About.com says that first, you need to avoid bringing your anger to the table. Sometimes we can be so angry and resentful that we create problems were they need not be. Your attorney will follow your lead. If you are angry and punitive, then your lawyer is more likely to be adversarial also. Second, be prepared with lots of questions. Ask to see documents before they are filed. If there is anything in them that you don’t agree with, be sure to speak up. Also be sure to note the tone. Are you okay with how things are being said? This process is already difficult, why make it harder on either of you?
