Surprise, You're Divorced!

Surprise, You're Divorced!

Those pesky in-laws, they’re often trying to mess up your marriage. In a case that seems like it flopped right out of a Bollywood—errr, Hollywood—movie, a couple in Northern India learned that their last several years of wedded bliss were actually spent as a legally divorced couple.

When the wife, Meena Verma, went to court to report abuse from her in-laws, she discovered that she and her husband had been legally divorced for 10 years. Her brother-in-law, a lawyer, had forged divorce papers a decade earlier when Verma and her husband were about to make a similar complaint.

The couple is filing a petition against this unusual forgery, which was pretty sneaky and extreme—since the brother-in-law got away with it! After all, remember thinking you wouldn’t survive forging mom or dad’s name on a note to skip school? Hopefully the court will dismiss the forged papers and let the couple go on in peace. But Verna certainly proved that her in-laws were up to no good all along. [Reuters]
