"I am very taken by Ariane's concept and the philosophy of the website. In any case, I just loved the idea and am glad to chance upon it while reading Oprah." -Marion

Celebrate Carbon Belch Day

Celebrate Carbon Belch Day

Yes, you read the above correctly. A tongue-in-cheek (or is it?) site called Carbon Belch Day is urging each and every one of us to enlarge our carbon footprints. The simple act of belching releases carbon dioxide, but that’s just skimming the eco-friendly surface in terms of what you can do. Take an aimless drive or mow your lawn even though you just did so yesterday! Why not throw on every light and air condition in your house?

Although some may take the sarcasm behind Carbon Belch Day offensively, it is merely a call to laugh a little about all the “go green!” mantras that surround us. Will turning off the lights for 24 hours really impact anything? What about taking the stairs instead of the elevator?

The folks behind the site point out that carbon output calculators are popping up “all as a basis for you feeling even more guilty about being a human being who is desecrating the planet in the 21st century (and maybe you’ll buy some carbon credits).” Whether or not you agree with the humorous call to belch, the site creators do rightfully expose the fact that green living is so often tied up with consumerism and buying things.

Think you’ll participate this June 12? [Carbon Belch Day]
