Green House Tour!

Green House Tour!

The kids want to play a video game? They’ve got to hop on a stationary bike for 30 minutes to make enough power to do so then. No, this isn’t a new government regulation to get your kids to avoid video games. It’s a museum exhibit in Chicago!

The Museum of Science and Industry has installed a house on its premises and it’s got all the green fixins: solar panels, gardens and low-flow showers. Although there are plenty of aspects that teach visitors about going green, the most fascinating is the energy use monitor. Usage is calculated and shown in “real time” on a flat screen TV, and includes both energy input and output.

All of the eco-friendly parts of the house are available to buy in the retail world and are realistically viable, so taking the tour is a good way to explore changes you can make in your own home, without doing a full-out renovation. Do you have a green “wish list” for your house? [Re-nest]
