Why Money and Religion Don't Mix

What do you do when you're broke and have no money for housing? Well, if you lived in Paraguay, you'd protest your government officials by nailing two women to crosses and parading them through town. I'm not making this up!

During a city-wide protest in Asunción, two women allowed themselves to be crucified in order to get the president to grant funds for low-income housing. Turns out the little stunt worked, though the government will be keeping a close eye on the money. There've been no reports of serious injuries, only that one of the women passed out from the heat and severe pain.

Ok. Let's put aside for the moment that the ruse worked and examine what was actually done. THEY NAILED THEMSELVES TO CROSSES. I can't think of any reason, financial or otherwise, that such an action would be warranted. Perhaps Paraguay has different customs, but it's still a democracy. Although, come to think of it, that sort of action might be just the shock this country needs.

Regardless of how I feel about such dramatic action, this story does serve to prove one point. Change happens when our voices are heard. If you want something changed, you have to do something about it. If you're against all of the bailouts in our own country, write a letter or join a cause. It doesn't take radical demonstrations to make a point, but it does take some sort of action.
