Does Sin Matter?
As we approach the important Christian holiday of Easter this weekend, USA Today asks, “How can Christians celebrate Jesus’ atonement for their sins…if they don’t recognize themselves as sinners?”
New information from Ellison Research shows that though 87% of adults believe in sin, they apparently only believe certain actions are sins, and not others. For example, adultery ranks highest on the list of sins, while gambling is almost the lowest. So the concern is not only that people have lost touch with what Easter means, but we’re also changing the definition of what sin means to accommodate a modern life. In order to appreciate Christ’s sacrifice, one reverend says, people have to see them selves as sinners who are alienated from God.
We would like to hear from you. Do you think the concept of sin is still required to live more spiritually through Christianity, or is it ok to take some liberties with what sin means? Even better—what actions should not be considered sins in a modern society? [USA Today]
