Where Religion and Science Meet

This May, a bunch of scientists will smash atoms together in the hopes of finding a particle called Higgs boson. What the heck is Higgs boson, you ask? Well, it’s merely the answer to everything.

Scientists believe that this particle, also called the “God particle,” is the missing piece to a grand theory of our place in the universe. Some are saying that this could diminish the need for religion in the world, since we essentially will have found the reason for life.

Newsweek spoke with Steven Weinberg, a theoretical physicist at the University of Texas in Austin, to ask him why this experiment is so important. He says that “as science explains more and more, there is less and less need for religious explanation” regarding the origin of the universe. Though Weinberg does expect the experiment to provide some insight, he doesn’t think it will “upset” people’s religion.
