Make Employers Want You

Yes, it stinks to have lost your job in a recession, and yes, it stinks that you now have to find a new job in a recession, but that doesn’t mean you’re destined to be unemployed forever. There are a few tricks you can do with your application to stand out and get the job you want. Linda Stern from Newsweek.com has some strategies for you, including:

  • Try moving to a growing industry, such as healthcare or education, as there are more likely to be openings.
  • Research and really hone your application to the job you’re applying to. Don’t be afraid to reach out to companies that aren’t advertising any openings.
  • Update your resume to include more accomplishments, and list the skills that apply to the industry you want to work in.
  • Get a part-time job to get the cash flowing, just until you find what you want.

And if you want more information on coping with a job loss, read our interview with career development guru Richard Nelson Bolles. The author of the wildly successful book series, What Color Is Your Parachute?, shared some tips and advice from the 2008 update. [Newsweek.com]
