Ugly Betty Is a New Yorker
Did you watch the newest episode of the popular ABC show “Ugly Betty” last night? Did you notice it looked a bit different?
The show returned to its roots by moving operations back to New York, the city that the production team preferred and where it shot the pilot. Silvio Horta, the executive producer, originally left the Big Apple because of high costs, but a tax rebate recently made it feasible again. “It seems to ground the show," he says. "It’s big and zany, and being out in the city gives it a level of realness.”
Ratings fell by a few million viewers last season, and the team is hoping the real New York reinvigorates the audience a bit. The abrupt location change gave the cast about two months to venture out to the East Coast, but for many of them, it was returning home on account of previously living in New York.
Most of the cast members are excited to be in New York. Michael Urie, the actor who plays Marc (an assistant to Wilhelmina Slater, played by Vanessa Williams) says he loves being back in Manhattan. “The human experience is so much clearer here than in L.A. In L.A., the human experience is show business,” he says.
