Answer:

Not a store, but Craiglist! There's a furniture section and even a Free section. Even more guerrilla than that, I think half my apartment is from street finds.

Target has some stuff as well.

Check out CB2--they're an offshoot of Crate and Barrel with younger, hipper, smaller furniture for modern apartments.
