A Couple of Hooters

A Couple of Hooters

She’s a 22-year-old University of Kansas student who digs vintage clothes and, er, vintage men. He’s a 61-year-old Vietnam-vet -turned-KU-mascot who goes by the name White Owl. They’re united by a love of tie-dyed pageboy hats and causing awkward silences when they make out around the campus.

Julia Lee and Jim “Saul” Tucker, AKA White Owl, first met when he came to speak at one of her classes. She approached him after class and a romance developed shortly thereafter. The two are currently planning a wedding and inviting the whole university to attend.

“She wants to be Ms. White Owl,” he said. “She’s the greatest friend to me. God has granted my prayers.”

Really, White Owl? We would have liked to hear those prayers. They were probably something like “Dear righteous ruler of the Universe, please bring me a smokin’ hot 22-year-old who will be intoxicated by my patchouli smell and collection of Grateful Dead records.”

White Owl was kicked out of his apartment after the record store he worked at closed. He picked up his life and moved closer to the KU campus, where he became a cult hero after he started showing up at basketball games and doing an odd hippie dance in the bleachers. His story is unconventional, but it shows that anything is possible when you decide to pick up the pieces and make a new life for yourself. [The Kansas City Star]
