Same-Sex Unions Debate Wages On

While supporters of gay marriage have seen huge strides of late, they still have a bit more to climb on their uphill battle.

The success started on May 15 when the California Supreme Court struck down a ban on same-sex marriage and announced that the state would begin to accept the marriages this summer. Then, on May 29, New York Governor David Paterson told state health and legal agencies to change their policies to recognize same-sex marriages performed in places that have deemed them legal (i.e. California, Canada and a number of other countries).

However, these changes are now facing some serious opposition and couples in the process of planning a wedding are trying to do so before these states change their minds. In California there is talk of trying to get the state’s supreme court to delay the June weddings until voters come to the polls again in November and in New York many conservatives are looking for ways to fight the governor’s decision, saying that it goes against New York State Constitution.

Do you think it's time for states to stop dilly dallying and give gay couples the right to marry, or is this going too far? [Associated Press & San Francisco Chronicle]
