Debt Ed

America, please pay attention. Australian financial leaders are hoping to convince their government to include money-management as a core curriculum course of study for students in that country as a means to stopping out of control spending and reducing debt.

The hope is that students would learn all aspects of financial planning, from how to create a budget to choosing cell-phone plans. Then, they’ll be armed with the knowledge to make better choices as adults.

Debt is a worldwide problem, and Australians should be applauded for bringing the issue to the education table. While it remains to be seen if the measure will hold up and become an actionable step, it would be great to see the U.S. start a similar discussion. Do you think kids should be taught about debt in school? [Sydney Morning Herald]
