Question:What can a co-signer of a vehicle do if the other one isn't meeting their end of the bargain?

My husband co-signed on a car for a friend of his and now my husband's credit score is shot to hell in a matter of 11 months. My husband made this decision without asking me first and it's caused a rift between us. His friend has been late on payments since January 2008. I've spoken to him over the phone and he lies about it. He claims he paid them. Meanwhile, we get collections calls daily asking for him. I think he's 4 months behind now. What should my husband do? Should he get an attorney to help scare the friend into re-financing the car or paying his part?
