Would you consider Relocation?
According to an article in the Christian Science Monitor, "Only 13 percent of job seekers finding positions in the third quarter of 2008 moved for their new job, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. That is down from 15 percent in 2007 and 16 percent in 2006."
In other words, more people are reluctant to leave their homes and communities in order to follow their company to a new city. People are also reluctant to try to sell their homes or to ask a spouse to ditch their job.
Have you been offered a raise of a new position in exchange for relocation? Were you willing to take it? If the opportunity hasn't come up for you, would you take it in the future?

I agree with LauraLee311 -- there are so many factors to consider. Living in an apartment and not having kids are two huge variables that can make relocating for the right job easy for a young professional like myself. My fiance and I just moved to Ohio for his new job, and -- other than leaving behind friends and family -- there was really nothing holding us back. But add kids and a mortgage to the equation, and there is a lot more to consider.
I think that depends on what your living situation is. With the economy the way it is, I would be hesitant about asking a spouse to leave their job so I could follow mine, because what if they couldn't find a new one wherever we moved? It would depend on which job had higher pay, benefits, etc. Of course, since I'm not married, and not really attached to anything here permanently, then mine would be a resounding yes. Besides, I like to travel.
There are so many variables, aren't there? I think it's especially hard to move in times of uncertainty. After all, a job is just a job but where you live has so much to do with quality of life!
Hmmm, that's a tough one. I think at the stage my fiancé and I are in now, yes, we probably would be willing to relocate. We live in an apartment, so we wouldn't have to worry about selling our home. We also don't have kids, so we wouldn't have to worry about uprooting their lives. Of course, it would also depend on the new job, pay, perks, and the company would have to pay for our moving expenses.
